Introducing futi
A next-gen football live score app that lets fans see the game like the pros do
Wouldn’t it be cool if football stats actually captured the game?
Everyone knows football — soccer, not gridiron — is hard to measure. This isn’t baseball. The game is so fluid, so beautifully complex, that for over a century the only thing anyone bothered to count was goals. Even after people began keeping detailed records of what happens on the ball, the stats we got from it weren’t very useful. Be honest: how much do pass counts or tackle success rates really tell you about a match?
Clubs need better information than that to scout players and analyze opponents, so over the last few years, as football has entered its Moneyball era, data scientists have been busy building models that measure the sport in more meaningful ways. You’ve probably caught glimpses of these metrics in articles and broadcasts, but for the most part they’re kept private while public stats have barely evolved.
We think fans want to understand the game the same way the pros do. Sorry, let’s try that again in tech marketing voice: we believe you deserve to be part of football’s data revolution. Numbers are a big part of how we talk about sports — we should all be talking about better ones.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce futi.
futi is a next-gen live score app. That means it looks like whatever you already use to check scores and stats, but with a lot more horsepower under the hood. When you open the app for the first time, you’ll see match scores, live stats, formations, league tables and information on teams and players you follow. You can turn on notifications for key moments like lineups and goals. This should all feel comfortably familiar.
As you start to explore, though, you’ll discover that futi is different:
futi measures what really matters. Instead of just counting up passes and shots, we use detailed match data to predict how much every single touch of the ball changes teams’ chances of scoring and conceding. Our ratings are built from these play-by-play goal probabilities and tested against actual match results to make sure they’re not just another useless number.
Tactical context is key. That’s why futi models things like team styles, player roles, tactical tendencies and phases of play, because we believe it’s impossible to measure football without accounting for how the game is played.
It just makes sense. Even though futi is built on advanced metrics from machine learning models, you won’t have to wrestle with weird decimals or impenetrable acronyms (unless you really want to, you sicko). Everything in the app is designed to make sense to football fans. And instead of just-trust-us ratings, our stats come backed by model explainers for anyone curious to understand how they work.
A picture is worth a thousand numbers. futi isn’t just about stats — it’s also packed with data visual stories on every player, team, game and season. Grab your favorite charts, pitch plots or heatmaps and share them wherever you want.
We’ll be rolling out futi for early testing in MLS this summer, with plans to expand to other leagues as quickly as we can. In the coming weeks, we’ll be writing updates on our newsletter to show off features we’re working on and get your feedback. The goal is to make this app whatever fans want it to be — if you’re excited to tell your friends about futi, we’re doing our job.
To keep up with the project and get early access to futi, sign up for our Substack, follow us on Bluesky and come talk football with us on Discord. We can’t wait to build the future of football with you.
Sounds super valuable guys, looking forward to seeing the app in action!
So excited for this! I’m a UX designer at Sports Reference. I would love to beta test this if that becomes an opportunity!
